What is the Mother Wound?

Mother Wound is a term used to describe the emotional and psychological scars that can develop in a person's relationship with their mother. It encompasses the negative impact of various experiences, such as neglect, emotional abuse, unmet needs, and unrealistic expectations, which can lead to feelings of unworthiness, inadequacy, and other emotional challenges.

It often affects your self-esteem, ability to form healthy relationships, and overall well-being. These wounds profoundly impact our lives and are deeply intertwined with our attachment styles, which are fundamental patterns of relating to ourselves, others and the world at large.

HEY THERE!

I am Marisa.


I grew up in Singapore in a very conservative Chinese family with controlling parents. My mother was emotionally unavailable and critical, which led me to have low self-worth. I became the "good girl", the people-pleaser with low boundaries. I was in and out of toxic relationships and friendships. I was once called a "doormat" because I didn't know how to say "No". 

Then, at 30, I started doing inner work, cultivating self-awareness, healing my emotional wounds, and rewiring my limiting beliefs.

I started my coaching journey 9 years ago as a holistic health coach. I began to recognise a common thread among my clients: their challenging mother-daughter dynamic, which affected their self-worth and led to burnout and health issues. 

Now, I support women healing from childhood trauma and stepping into their authentic power. 

I'm a trauma-informed coach and a neuro-linguistics programming practitioner, and I'm trained in root cause therapy. But most importantly, I'm a Mother Wound survivor.

Somatic Practices

I use body-centred therapies and exercises that enhance your mind-body connection. These practices emphasize awareness of physical sensations and bodily experiences to promote healing and well-being. They are particularly valuable in addressing trauma, as they help you reconnect with your body and process emotions that are often stored in the body. Trauma, especially childhood trauma, can leave a deep imprint on your body.

Somatic practices work by:

  • Increasing body awareness: Helping you become more attuned to physical sensations.
  • Releasing stored tension and trauma: Assisting in releasing chronic muscle tension and the emotional energy stored in the body.
  • Promoting relaxation and calm: Encouraging states of relaxation and reducing stress responses.
  • Fostering a sense of safety and grounding: Helping you feel more present and secure in your body

Neuro-Linguistic Programming

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a psychological framework that explores how language and neurological processes influence behaviours and patterns learned from experience. It is designed to help you improve communication, overcome challenges, and achieve personal and professional goals by understanding and altering your thoughts and behaviours. 

Here are some of the benefits of NLP:

Empowerment: NLP empowers you by providing tools to change your responses to traumatic memories.

  • Emotional Regulation: Techniques like anchoring and reframing help manage and regulate your emotional responses.
  • Positive Outlook: Reframing and visualization encourage a more positive and constructive view of the past and your future.
  • Increased Control: NLP helps you gain a sense of control over your internal experiences, reducing feelings of helplessness associated with trauma.

Root Cause Therapy

Root Cause Therapy (RCT) is a therapeutic approach that helps you heal from trauma by identifying and addressing the underlying causes of your emotional and psychological distress. Unlike therapies that only manage symptoms, RCT goes into the core traumatic events and associated suppressed emotions and beliefs. Facilitating emotional release, transforming negative beliefs, and empowering you with a deeper understanding of your experiences provides relief and supports your development of healthier coping mechanisms and enhanced self-awareness.

Here are some benefits of RCT:
