18 Self-Care Ideas for Winter

selfcare selflove Dec 21, 2020

Do the lack of sun and the cold, grey days get to you during winter?

Do you get tired quickly and not as energetic as usual?

Do you feel moody and unmotivated?

In the winter, looking after yourself definitely gets more challenging when you all want to sit on the couch with a blanket and vegetate in front of the TV. You know what I'm talking about! :) During the dark winter months, when we get less sunlight, many people experience Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a mild form of depression. People suffering from SAD will start to crave carbs and sugary foods to help deal with the winter blahs. Honestly, this includes me, too! I guess that is why people bake a lot in winter.

Plus, with the pandemic this year, it will be tougher as most of us will not travel home to spend Christmas and New Year with our family and friends. So it is very crucial to look after your well-being this winter. To help you get through this season, I put together 18 simple self-care ideas. They take between 5 minutes to 30 minutes, so choose one that resonates with you. Even 5 minutes of self-care every day is better than the occasional massage.

5 minutes Ideas

1. Take your Vitamin D

Vitamin D is called the "sunshine vitamin" because it is produced in your skin in response to sunlight. It's essential to take your Vitamin D drops in winter for immunity. Also, research has shown that vitamin D might play a critical role in regulating mood and warding off depression.

2. Make your bed

A messy bed can make you feel anxious and unorganized. Making your bed first thing in the morning can make you feel like you have accomplished something and keep you feeling motivated throughout the day.

3. Listen to music

What's your jam? Is it rock 'n roll, rap or R&B? I listen to a couple of songs in my playlist to pick up my mood immediately. Brimful of Asha, anyone? (If you know, you know!)

4. Moisturise your body

Dry skin is so common in winter. Often, I forget to moisturise my body after I pop out of the shower. So now I keep my moisturisers on my nightstand and moisturise my hands, arms and legs just before bed.

5. Massage your feet

A quick foot massage session before heading off to bed helps improve blood flow and enables you to sleep better. It also improves mood and lowers anxiety.

6. Enjoy a piece of chocolate

Instead of stuffing your face, make it a ritual- stop what you are doing, close your eyes, be present and enjoy the chocolate melting in your mouth, paying attention to flavour and texture.

7. Put on a DIY face mask

Mix one tablespoon of oats, half a tablespoon of fresh lemon juice, and one teaspoon of honey. Rub it all over your face and leave it on for 15 minutes. Then, wash with warm water and apply a light moisturiser. Your face will feel smooth and hydrated.

8. Stretch Your Body

The cold weather might keep you more homebound, so doing 10-15 minutes of yoga stretches is good for your circulation, relieves all those winter aches and pains, and boosts your mood.

9. Call a family or friend

Pick up the phone and talk to a family member or friend. Sometimes, all you need to do to pick up your mood is to hear a familiar voice.

10. Read a chapter in a book

Being indoors means you have more time to read the book you've wanted to finish. As much as I would like to read a physical book, I found it much easier to download a book on my phone and read it while I having my morning coffee.

11. Journal

Writing in your journal can be a great way to release some anxieties and worries that you might have in your head. It's also an excellent way to document some lovely memories of motherhood and life.

12. Meditate

How often in a day do you take time to be still? It's hard for mothers to relax, not plan and think ahead. Meditation reminds us to be in the present moment. Download meditation apps like Calm, Headspace or Insight Timer to give your mind space.

30 minutes Ideas

13. Have a dance party

It's a fun way to exercise and improves cardiovascular fitness. It also raises the endorphins or so-called feel-good chemicals, and this can lighten your mood and reduce the risk of depression. So turn up the music and move your body!

14. Declutter one area of your house

A cluttered house can leave you feeling out of control and affect your mood. Spending time decluttering and getting rid of things will help you feel happier and more in control. You can even watch Marie Kondo on Netflix to get you inspired!

15. Head for the local coffee shop

There's nothing like a hot cup of beverage and a small treat to perk up your day! A change of scene is what we sometimes need to get through the long winter day. Take a book with you or listen to music while drinking coffee or tea.

16. Take a walk in nature

Yes, I know! Walking in the cold might not sound appealing, but you will be amazed at what 30 minutes of walking can do for your mood. Get some fresh air and move your body to feel alive!

17. Get some sun when you can

I know it's not always possible, but drop everything you do whenever the sun is out and get some much-needed Vitamin D! Close your eyes, feel the warmth on your face and appreciate the sun.

18. Take a hot bath

When was the last time you took a nice, long bath? Make it extra special with essential oils, candles, your favourite drink and something to read or listen to music.
